Sebastian Vincent is an experienced European and UK Patent Attorney, with a background in electrical and electronic engineering. He has worked in the IP field since 2013. He has significant experience of successfully drafting and prosecuting patent applications within the UK, Europe and Internationally. His experience includes drafting and successfully prosecuting inventions relating to electronics, mechanics, computing, defence equipment, medical and diagnostic equipment, personal care, and domestic products. He has patent experience of a range of sectors including defence, telecoms, computing, electronics, and consumer products.
He has a very broad range of IP experience from a rich and varied career working both in-house and in private practice. Accordingly, he has extensive experience of IP exploitation and management within varied commercial and governmental settings. Such expertise includes: invention capture and assessment; formulating and evaluating patent (prior art) searches; developing IP strategies; identifying and managing copyright, design and trademark issues; commercial negotiation; formulating and negotiating IP aspects of international collaborative programmes; inter-Governmental technology and IP transfer and exploitation; IP contract drafting and review; performing freedom to operate (FTO) analysis; IP portfolio management; IP licensing and exploitation; IP training and development; implementation of processes and platforms to enable improved IP management; supplier and stakeholder management; and business process redevelopment.
Having spent many years in defence acquisition he has significant experience of procurement and acquisition, including defence exports, international collaboration, supply chain management, technology collaboration and de-risking, requirements setting, bid assessment, and negotiating with suppliers. He has extensive experience of working in complex international environments, collaborating with colleagues and suppliers across the globe, including the USA, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, and China, from which he is highly adept at building effective working relationships across different cultures, commercial environments and time-zones.
Prior to becoming a patent attorney, he worked as a project manager on international defence acquisition projects ranging in value from £2m to £500m+, and also held a number of roles relating to technology development, technology exploitation, and technology strategy development. This enables him to bring a wealth of skills and experience – including in project management (including risk management and financial management), stakeholder management, technology development, technology strategy development, formulating and leading teams, and training and up-skilling staff – to clients, allowing him to provide further relevant expertise where appropriate.
Accordingly, Sebastian brings a diverse and range of knowledge and experience, across many sectors and technologies, that he can employ to provide holistic advice to clients of all sizes – both on IP and closely related topics. He is experienced at working with companies of all sizes, from start-ups to large multinationals, to help them get the maximum value from IP and to minimise commercial risk. He is highly sensitive to commercial issues and realities and is adept at tailoring his advice to the needs of the client, based on their unique circumstances and commercial drivers. He particularly enjoys working with SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) and start-ups due to the dynamic and varied range of issues (and opportunities) that arise.
He is based in England but is regularly available in Norway.
