A mechanical and design engineer with a profound understanding of technical creativity.

Stefan Sasse is a German and European patent attorney and Partner in the Mechanics group of ONSAGERS. As a professor, he teaches design engineering and mechanics in Hamburg.

In addition to protective rights of technical inventions in mechanical engineering and of consumer goods, his particular expertise is design related IP: in other words, he is focused on enforcement and defence of patents, utility models and, also non-registered, designs. His technical background, after years of experience, is production engineering, material science, consumer goods design and production, automotive and aviation, medical aids and implants, particularly in orthopaedics, trauma surgery and cardiology, and boat and ship building.

Before joining ONSAGERS as a partner in 2022 to found the first EU office in Hamburg, Stefan worked at Hoffmann Eitle for over five years. Before that, after finishing education with the German Patent and Trademark Office, he had founded and established a patent practice at White & Case LLP since 2002. He was regularly responsible for projects related to IP in a broader sense of meaning, like portfolio management, transactions and due diligence – and for an infringement case with one of the largest amounts in dispute in history in the field of telecommunications. He had studied mechanical and design engineering at TU Hannover and RWTH Aachen and obtained the doctor’s degree at TUHH (Hamburg). Meanwhile the biomechanics lab of the Hamburg BG Trauma Hospital (Boberg) was under his responsibility. After many years of teaching assignment at Hamburg University of Fine Arts in the School of Design, Stefan was rewarded the degree and title of a Professor teaching mechanics and design engineering.

He is member of Deutsche Patentanwaltskammer, EPI, GRUR and VPP. His professional languages are German, English and Spanish.

And outside the office he is, a northerner, fond of sailing or being, as close as possible, by the sea.

Stefan Sasse

Ein Konstruktionsingenieur mit tiefem Verständnis für technische Kreativität

Dr. Stefan Sasse ist Deutscher und Europäischer Patentanwalt und Partner in der Praxisgruppe Mechanik von ONSAGERS. Als Professor unterrichtet er Konstruktionstechnik und Mechanik in Hamburg.

Neben den technischen Schutzrechten im Maschinenbau und in der Konsumgüterindustrie sind Designrechte seine besondere Expertise – also die Durchsetzung und Verteidigung von Patenten, Gebrauchsmustern und, auch unregistrierten, Designs. Seine technischen Schwerpunktgebiete sind nach jahrelanger Erfahrung die Fertigungstechnik, Werkstofftechnik, Produktionstechnik von Konsumgütern, der Automobil- und Flugzeugbau, medizinische Hilfsmittel und Implantate insbesondere der Unfallchirurgie, Orthopädie und Kardiologie, sowie der Boots- und Schiffbau.

Bevor er 2022 Partner bei ONSAGERS wurde, um unser erstes EU-Büro in Hamburg zu gründen, arbeitete Dr. Sasse in Hamburg fünf Jahre bei Hoffmann Eitle. Zuvor, nach Abschluss seiner Patentanwaltsausbildung beim DPMA, war er ab 2002 bei White & Case LLP neben dem Aufbau einer Patentpraxis auch regelmäßig betraut mit weiter gefassten IP-Projekten wie Portfolio-Management, Transaktionen und Due-Diligence-Prüfungen – sowie einem der historisch größten Patent-Litigation-Fälle aus dem Bereich der Telekommunikation. Er hatte Konstruktionstechnik im Maschinenbau an der TU Hannover und der RWTH Aachen studiert und an der TUHH in Hamburg an einem konstruktionstechnischen und biomechanischen Thema der Medizintechnik promoviert. Währenddessen oblag ihm die Leitung des medizintechnischen Labors des BG-Unfallkrankenhauses Hamburg Boberg. Nach vielen Jahren als Gastprofessor wurde Dr. Sasse 2012 Professor mit Lehrauftrag für technische Mechanik und Konstruktion im Studiengang Industriedesign an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg.

Er ist Mitglied der Deutschen Patentanwaltskammer, bei EPI, GRUR und VPP. Seine beruflichen Sprachen sind Deutsch, Englisch und Spanisch.
Und außerhalb des Büros ist er, Norddeutscher, besonders gern segeln oder irgendwie sonst möglichst nahe am Meer.
